Welcome to School Age Care

This training series is intended to help orient new school-age care staff and supervisors or provide a refresher for more experienced practitioners. The curriculum is based on best practices outline by the National Afterschool Association (NAA) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). Completion of this series will fulfill ten contact hours of training.

Session One: Your Role as a School-age Care Professional

In this session, school-age care staff will learn about professionalism, including appearance, confidentiality, diversity and attitude. A variety of basic daily responsibilities will be discussed. Participants will receive information to assist them with professional development.

Session Two: How do We Manage?

Participates will learn a variety of effective classroom management techniques in the session. Behavior management and guidance techniques will also be discussed for working with school-age children. Additionally, staff will learn how to include children with special needs in their program. .

Session Three: We all Work Together

This session introduces school-age providers to basic verbal and written communication tools that they will need to use in a school age care setting (with children, co-workers, families, supervisors, and school or program personnel).

Session Four: Here's to Your Health

This session will offer support to school-age care staff to reinforce positive health and safety attitudes and behaviors. A health provider will teach this session and explain how health status can be transformed, and how to protect the health of school-age care staff in a group setting..

Session Five: Plan to be Busy!

In this final session, staff will learn about setting up a school-age environment, as well as a variety of developmentally appropriate activity ideas to use indoors and outdoors. Lesson planning will be discussed, with attention given to age-appropriateness and children's input. Participants will learn about resource information for future planning and staff development..

Pre-registration is required for all classes

Participants are expected to attend all classes when they register for a series.

Registration fees to reserve your space are due at least one week before the series starts.

Please be respectful and cancel your reservation if you cannot attend, so people on the waiting list can take your place.

Refunds will not be given unless you call twenty-four hours in advance to cancel your reservation.
